Only in Fairbanks would a race organizer encourage a “fun” run during a DEC Air Quality Advisory.
At 10 am Saturday, Jan 28, the PM 2.5 at the State Building (675 7th Ave, Fairbanks) was 53 micrograms per cubic meter, and Running Club North held the Chilly Buns Run. Who knows how thick the smoke was in low-lying areas? They should rename the race “Future Asthmatics Qualifying Run.”
When will residents learn that PM 2.5 is harmful to our health? When will DEC figure out how to spread the word about their Air Quality Advisories? When will the media report the air quality conditions so all the public knows what precautions should be taken? Real-time data on PM 2.5 levels is on the web for three sites in the Fairbanks area. See Real-time Monitoring to know when to protect yourself.
