The PM 2.5 nonattainment area, view map above, was designated in December 2009. Local heating emissions contributing to particulate pollution, identified by analysis, include woodstoves, distillate oil, industrial sources, and mobile emissions.
After three years of monitoring air quality, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recommended to the EPA that the populated area of the Fairbanks North Star Borough be designated a PM 2.5 nonattainment area due to the community exceeding the health-based 24-hour exposure limit of 35 micrograms per cubic meter.
